Welcome to District 1, located on Manhattan’s Lower Eastside and East Village!

Community Partnerships

District 1 is proud to work with these incredible organizations and educational partners to continue offering unique and varied learning experiences for students at all grade levels

BioBus and BioBase

BioBus is a research-grade science lab built on a bus. BioBus, with a team of trained scientists, visits many District 1 schools to engage students in hands-on science learning. BioBase programs give local students the chance to work alongside masters and PhD level scientists on in-depth projects, experiencing real science and preparing for future STEM internships.

New York City Center for Aerospace + Applied Mathematics

The New York City Center for Space Science Education is located in District 1 on the Lower East Side at 220 Henry Street (entrance on Montgomery Street). Students can explore the Challenger Space Center and/or the NASA Aerospace Education Lab. Click the picture to the left for more information. The NYCCAAM is located in District 1, sharing the building with Orchard Collegiate Academy and University Neighborhood Middle School.

The Abrons Art Center

The Abrons Arts Center is the performing and visual arts center of Henry Street Settlement. The facility links the 300-seat proscenium Playhouse, originally constructed as the Neighborhood Playhouse by philanthropists Alice Lewisohn and Irene Lewisohn in 1915 to the main art center building, which opened in 1975. The Abrons Arts Center hosted the District 1 Arts Festival on June 15-18, 2017.

The Lower Eastside Girls Club

The Lower Eastside Girls Club of NY provides a place where middle school and high school girls can grow, learn, have fun, and develop confidence in themselves and their ability to make a difference in the world. By delivering strong arts, literacy, science, health and leadership programs, LESGC provides girls with the vision to plan – and the tools to build – their future. LESGC hosts regular District 1 meetings and professional development for principals, teachers, and parent leaders, and partners with many District 1 schools.
